Prestigious Asiago Biancone Marble High Relief depicting the Lion of St. Mark with a closed Book and sword. The work was completely worked and carved by hand. Provenance Venice, private collection.
The precision, attention to detail, and definition of detail should be noted. The anatomy of the lion is carved with much accuracy (nails, muscles, mane and wings).
Numerous symbolic interpretations are possible regarding the combination of lion, book and sword; in this case, the closed book and sword is popularly believed to symbolize the condition of war.
However, such interpretations are not universally accepted as the Serenissima never codified its symbols represented in an unambiguous way.
