Beautiful bas-relief depicting the palindrome of Sator in Istrian marble. Provenance Venice, private collection. The Sator square is a recurring Latin inscription, in the form of a magic square, consisting of the following five words: SATOR, AREPO, TENET, OPERA, ROTAS. Their juxtaposition, in the order indicated, results in a palindrome, that is, a sentence that remains identical when read from left to right and vice versa. The same palindromic phrase is obtained by reading the words of the square from bottom to top as long as each line is read from right to left. The inscription has been the subject of frequent archaeological finds, both in stone epigraphs and graffiti, but its meaning and symbolic significance still remain obscure, despite numerous hypotheses. High-quality and exclusive work. Medium-sized, proportionate. It presents a very graceful patina and grain. Perfect when hung on a wall or placed on top of a tripod. Lot more unique than rare. Beautiful marble sculpture depicting Apollo del Belvedere. Provenance Venice, private collection. The work depicts the Greek god Apollo, who has just killed the serpent Python with the arrows of his bow. His muscles, still tense, hint at the exertion following the battle against Python, while his ringlet hair falls fluidly over his neck and elegantly gathered on his head, which is encircled by strophium, an ornamental band symbolizing a deity or king. The god is entirely nude, with the exception of his shoulder quiver, sandals, and cloak wrapped around his right shoulder, which spills over his left arm and part of his back.
