The cane is the work of a man uninhibited, who does not account for his time and for whom time doesn’t matter or no longer means anything” (G. Segas) Popular art canes by L. Jantzen    Saint-Lambert, born around 635 B.C. in Maastricht, is well known for being the patron saint of that city and also the patron of the Brabant region shared between Belgium and Holland. He is also the patron and protector of hunters.     This One-piece Cane is carved from beech wood, it has on top of the carving a religious scene of Saint-Lambert, just at the moment when Christ appears on the antlers of the deer he was going to kill. Saint-Lambert is shown kneeling and pointing his spear at the deer which is peacefully standing in front of him at this moment, he is contemplating the Christ which appears resplendent between the deer's antlers, a moment which is well known as the miracle of Saint-Lambert. Behind this scene, we see his dog and a bird sculpted which could well be a pheasant which is a typical hunting bird in these countries.  The rest of the shaft is carved with four continuous lines forming a spiral with interspersed knots as is usual in 18th-century folk art canes of these southern Netherlands regions. The entire composition of the carving is worn but never broken or with chips, the condition is excellent. There is a horn handle. It finishes with an 18th-century saw-tooth decorated top ferrule.   The O.L. of the cane is 89 cm, without chips or cracks, and the condition is excellent. Like most folk art canes, this one is wearing a warm and wonderful patina.   For a similar example of a southern Netherlands Cane see H. A Russian Champleve enamel Cane, Moscow ca. 1890

Champlevé enamelling is conceived to add colour and glitter to metalwork by creating small “compartments” below the surface, which are then filled with powdered glass and other materials and heated to a fusion point in a kiln. Once the enamel has cooled, must be smoothed with pumice stone and polished. The metal lines left untouched between the troughs serve as partitions. 

Used in jewellery art made during Classical Antiquity, it was only during the era of Celtic art (from about 400 BCE onwards) that the technique became consistent and widespread.

 

This cane is fashioned as a Montgolfier balloon and modelled in the raised enamel champleve technique with Russian patterns and coloured with turquoise blue, red, white, purple, and ultramarine-blue shadows. The elaboration detail and fineness suggest high skills. There are traces it has been gilded once. It is 7 cm high x 4 cm diameter, it bears Russian trademarks, one is the traditional Kokoshnik 48 the other is AA (assayer) Anatoly Apollonovich Artsybashev, active in Moscow from 1888 - 1898, according to the well-known silver-marks catalogue online

The tiger is rendered invisible in the jungle, forest, or high grasses by its magical fur cloak of irregular body stripes. The tiger signifies the stature and ferocity of the professional or momentary warrior, the pure capacity to spring into action at a critical time. This large handle depicts a majestic Bengal Tiger 10 cm high x 12 cm to the side x 3 cm wide. It is perched on a branch watching its prey alert. The cast is magnificently executed, and the shape encompasses perfectly the anatomical proportions of this beautiful feline. The collar has German hallmarks and unreadable makers-marks, it is on top of a snakewood shaft and ends with a bimetal ferrule. The O.L. is 91 cm. Without chips or cracks on the silver or the wood, the condition is perfect.

 

In this cane, function meets style and quality, it has a very dynamic design, fits perfectly and is a very wearable cane.

 

The motif of exotic animals came into fashion with the first ones appearing around 1860 in major European cities and giving the great public for the first time the chance to see many of the wonders of nature.

When a whale hunter retired, he continued to scrimshaw at home, using more sophisticated tools, it was a good way to pass the time and earn a little money, they practiced their knowledge as sculptors, nevertheless, we continue to denominate whaler’s art.

 

This one-piece Cane is carved from fruitwood to imitate a chain, this shaft is carved in three different sections, and the handle is a simple sphere on a ringed cylinder where a hole is opened to pass the rope through. There are seventeen perfectly carved links maintaining the same thickness and becoming smaller towards the end where the latter section finishes with a bimetallic ferrule. The handle is 12 cm high x 3 cm diameter and the O.L. is 90 cm. The whole piece has been varnished with a fine black tint which nowadays shows signs of wear. There are no cracks chips or insect damage, the condition is excellent.

This splendid and translucent massive piece is modelled in a light golden horn and decorated with carving dots, it is very similar to a Tortoiseshell, this wonderful material on canes comes to us from a rare breed of rams in the mountains of Tibet. Its construction involved heating, stretching and fussing of the massive horn in technology that is now long lost, that’s the reason why a few examples have survived.

 

The width of the hook handle is 12 cm lengthwise x 13,5 cm high x 2,7 cm thick. There is a 14k. Gold ring 3,5 cm high and engraved with the initials CL overlapping. The O.L. of the cane is 90 cm and finishes with a bimetal ferrule. Without cracks or damages, the condition is perfect.

The designer of this Art Nouveau Jewell communicates the joy that plants feel when being caressed by the sun and being moved by the wind, conceived by three plants all along, where the curved lines of its stems and long leaves intertwine harmoniously. Goldsmith technique suggests high skills, combining yellow-gold and rose-gold applied on a silver surface decorated with dotted incisions. A beautiful cultured grey pearl on the terrace is the cherry on the top of this marvellous composition.

The tested Silver knob, modelled in heavy cast and finely hand chased, is 5,5 cm high x 4 cm diameter. There is an unreadable silversmith mark, it is on top of a sound malacca shaft and is finishing with a 3 cm. horn tip, the O.L. is 90 cm. Without any chips or cracks or crashes, the condition is excellent!

 

The Art Nouveau ornament is composed of motifs that usually comes from asymmetrical compositions, as seen on furniture, jewellery, lamps, printed fabrics, etc. Nature is the source of inspiration for this art movement. The motifs are often long-stemmed, gracefully stylized plants and flowers as lilies, chalices, irises, poppies etc.

The Collie herder dog, well known as the Scottish Herder was descended from a localised variety of herding dogs from Scotland and Wales. The Rough Collie had been used for centuries as a sheepdog in the Scottish Highlands.

Today Rough Collies are more show dogs than working dogs. The breed has been developed to be an excellent companion animal and fits perfectly in most homes. * Herding with Rough Collies.

 

This original cane is fashioned of a single piece of stepped rattan, the figure depicts a masterly carved Collie Herder head with inset glass eyes, it shows the characterizing protruding muzzle and the long hair around the neck. It is brand marked BRIGG LONDON close to the crutch. In this carving, we got a good portrait of one of the most brave dog races.

This Scottish dog is 4 cm high x 12 cm to the side x 4 cm wide and the O.L. is 90 cm, it ends with a bimetal ferrule, it has minimal signs of usage, and the condition is excellent.

French Poodles, originally from Germany, were bred as hunting dogs to retrieve game from water, this elegant-looking hound, is also tagged as true aristocrats due to the way they stand and their magnificent coat colours.

Poodles are smart dogs, having some of the highest instinctive intelligence among water retrievers with substantial evidence of high adaptive skills. Poodles are eager for all kinds of activity, and they enjoy keeping busy. 

 

This high-end French-poodle portraiture is precious carved and finished with great expression, is 10 cm high by 4 cm to the side by 3,5 cm wide, with no hairlines or chips or cracks. It has a 5 mm high silver collar on top of a stepped malacca shaft marked ANTOINE Palais Royal ends with a bimetal ferrule. The O.L. is 88 cm without chips or cracks, the condition is perfect.

The term Cloisonné comes from the French “cloison” which translates to mean “partition”. It is the process by which different colours of enamel are, as the name suggests, separated by partitions made of thin metal ribbons, no thicker than a strand of hair, and fused onto a base layer of enamel to form intricate designs. This can be done by hand, or by using tweezers. Once in place the partitions, then filled with layers of enamel, until level with the top of the ribbons. The metal remains visible, allowing the beautiful patterns to shine through.

Cloisonné is widely considered to be the first enamelling method to come into existence and the ancient Mediterranean cultures have witnessed these beautiful crafts since the 10th century BC. * Anordain enamelling techniques.

 

This cane is fashioned as an elongated Milord shape and modelled in the enamel cloisonné technique with Japanese patterns, it is coloured with Bordeaux-red, yellow, stardust-composite, white, and pistachio green, where butterflies and cherry blossoms are the predominant motifs. The elaboration detail and fineness suggest high skills. It is 15 cm high x 4 cm diameter on top of a slender ebonized shaft, carved imitating dots, and finishing with a bimetal ferrule, the O.L. is 91 cm, there are minimal signs of use, and the condition is perfect.

This fascinating Belle Époque cane has a large silver handle representing at both sides two different naked nymphs arising from water waves, a symbolic Iris flower is also delineated, it measures 12 cm lengthwise x 6 cm high x 2,5 cm at its widest, it has German marks: The Crown, the 800 and the maker marks R S M. It is on top of a sound ebonized wood shaft and finishing with a horn tip. The O.L. is 90 cm, and the condition is perfect. It is still a very wearable cane.

 

The Art Nouveau movement was inspired by Nature and Fertility, and the artists represented exquisitely the sinuous forms of plants and women, this cane contains all of these elements in its design. Luckily it survived intact.

 

Notable is that cast figural silver handles were the top of the line of their kind, by far costlier than the standard, modelled production, and the most durables.

This amusing handle depicts in marvellous detail a graciously cockatiel-head beautifully conceived, it is surrounded by a coat of rings of plumage in vibrant tinted shades and spirited by two sparkling glass-eyes. 

The fruitwood handle is 7 cm high x 6,5 cm to the side x 4,5 cm wide on top of an ebonized shaft which has been marked S.Fox & Co. LIMITED in a metal badge, walking sticks and umbrellas from this brand have been among the favourites since the late 19th century and is ending with a horn tip. The O.L. is 91 cm, it has minimal signs of usage, the condition is perfect.

This delightful cane with the allure of a mascot, took the central stage for over 50 years in an extensive walking stick collection in Italy and captured the attention and curiosity of every viewer.

The motif of the cockatiel came into fashion with the first aviary appearing around 1860, giving to the public in major European cities, for the first time, the chance to see many of the exotic birds of the world.
